Doctor Who Era Review:Russell T Davies Era Review-Part 1

Doctor Who Era Review:Russell T Davies Era Review-Part 1

Hello,
Today,I shall be doing a Doctor Who Era Review of Russell T Davies Era of running Doctor Who.Also,if you would like me to do any another Era Review, just leave a comment below!Lets get started!
So, Russell is a hero to the Doctor Who fans.Without Russell,no one would know who the hell Matt Smith is.Without Russell,I wouldn't be even writing this blog. So,Russell's era was amazing! He worked with Chris,Billie,David,Catherine,Freema,Noel and many more! So,Davies started the whole incredible journey in 2003.And he was quite logic. He knew the structure  of how he was going to format Doctor Who and seized every opportunity given to him.I think the first series was really good!We got Chris and Billie, which just by looking at promo pictures, you can tell the dynamic between them is very unique, off and on screen. And the same with Billie and David.

Also,I love how Davies joined the continuity between the classic and new era.For example:

  • Series 1- The gateway to the classic era is opened with the Time War.Also, the Daleks are featured in 3 episodes of the series.A Cyberman head is seen briefly in "Dalek".And hints about the Doctor's family.
  • Series 2-More references to the Time War.Classic Doctor Who companions Sarah Jane and K9 return which also refers to K-9 and Company. The Cybermen make their regular official return to the show.
  • Series 3- The link to the new and classic is properly established by having the Master. Also, the Fifth Doctor,Peter Davison returns.

Breaking News:Two Missing Troughton-era Episodes Have Been Found!

Breaking News:Two Missing Troughton-era Episodes Have Been Found!web-of-fear-enemy-itunes

After weeks of speculation, nine episodes of Classic Doctor Who were found by Phillip Morris in Nigeria. The Enemy of the World and The Web of Fear were both aired in 1967 in Season 5.All episodes of the Enemy of  the World have been returned to the BBC Archive, but only episode 3 of the Web of Fear is missing, and is now being represented by telesnaps and audio. Both episodes are available on iTunes.

Details from BBC:

Recovered missing episodes of Doctor Who, the world’s longest running sci-fi drama are being revealed and available to view and own for the first time in over 40 years. Ten Doctor Who episodes were discovered through the tracking records of shipments made by the BBC to Africa that contained tapes for transmission. A restoration team has re-mastered each episode from the original black and white 1960s film and subsequently gone through a frame by frame restoration to the fantastic quality that audiences expect from Doctor Who.
The Enemy of the World

The first recovered story is The Enemy of the World, the fourth tale of Series 5 which first aired on the BBC in December 1967. The story features Patrick Troughton as both the Second Doctor and his antagonist (Ramon Salamander), alongside companions Jamie (Frazer Hines) and Victoria (Deborah Watling). On Earth in the near future, the Doctor and his companions are enmeshed in a deadly web of intrigue thanks to his uncanny resemblance to would-be 21st century dictator Salamander. He is hailed as the “”shopkeeper of the world”" for his efforts to relieve global famine, but why do his rivals keep disappearing? How can he predict so many natural disasters? The Doctor must expose Salamander’s schemes before he takes over the world.

The Web of Fear

A restoration teams has re-mastered episodes 1, 2, 4, 5 & 6 from the original black and white 1960s film and subsequently gone through a frame by frame restoration to the fantastic quality that audiences expect from Doctor Who. Episode 3 has been reconstructed using stills and audio. This is the 1968 story, The Web of Fear, and, as the original episode three remains missing, part of this story has been reconstructed using stills with the original audio.

Starring Patrick Troughton alongside Frazer Hines and Deborah Watling the story introduces Nicholas Courtney for the first time as Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart (who later returns as Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart). The TARDIS narrowly avoids becoming engulfed in a cobwebby substance in space. It arrives in the London Underground railway system, the tunnels of which are being overrun by the web and by the Great Intelligence’s robot Yeti. The time travellers learn this crisis was precipitated when Professor Travers accidentally caused one of the Yeti to be reactivated, opening the way for the Intelligence to invade again. The travellers work alongside army forces as they battle the alien menace, hampered by one of their number who has fallen under the Intelligence’s influence and is a traitor in their midst. The Intelligence’s goal is to drain the Second Doctor’s mind. The Doctor sabotages the device with which it intends to achieve this, so he can drain the Intelligence’s mind instead, but he is rescued by his friends before he can bring his plan to fruition. The Intelligence is repelled into space and the Doctor and his friends leave the army to clear up the mess.

To celebrate the return of the lost Patrick Troughton episodes,DWM have made two collectible covers, one of each episode for Doctor Who Magazine 466.Doctor Who Magazine has also launched a website that features an interview with the man responsible for the discovery, Philip Morris.“These films were discovered in Nigeria,” Philip exclusively tells DWM. “They weren’t actually at the station they were sold to, they were at a relay station. In Nigeria they have an internal bicycling system. We had the privilege of working with the Nigerian Television Authority, who have been a great help to us in determining what they had of their own recordings and overseas recordings. Fortunately for us, I was at a station, and I saw a piece of masking tape on a shelf. I looked up and it said ‘Doctor Who’. And I thought, ‘That looks interesting!’I pulled a film can down and I saw the story code: ‘Doctor Who. PP’. I thought, PP, let me have a check. I checked on my list and realised this was an episode of The Enemy of the World. So I pulled that can down, I saw there were six cans, and I thought, okay, there are six cans, so it’s possibly complete – but we’ll have to check that the contents match the cans, as cans get reused, or people put things in the wrong place. Then I counted another set of cans, which was Episodes 1 to 6 of The Web of Fear, except Episode 3. Episode 3 was not amongst them. So I checked those, they were complete, and I thought ‘Well, that’s not too bad!’”

DWM #466 is on sale Thursday 17 October 2013, priced £4.75.
